Proportional Representation needs leadership!
Please consider joining the NDP now to elect a leader passionate about PR!

The NDP leadership race is underway.

Proportional Representation has been in the NDP policy book since 2003 but it took Jack Layton and Thomas Mulcair to make it an election issue, and Nathan Cullen and Alex Boulerice to carry the torch as resolutely as they have done since the October 2015 election.

We need the NDP to continue their leadership on changing the voting system so that all voters are equal.

Let’s not lose the momentum! It’s never been more important to our movement to elect an NDP leader with a firm commitment to implementing proportional representation (PR) as the top priority of a new government.

Electing a strong NDP PR advocate is an essential part of our multi-partisan journey for equal votes:

In 2013, we encouraged our supporters to back Joyce Murray, the only pro-PR candidate in the Liberal leadership race. While she came second, our support DID make a difference. She injected PR into the Liberal leadership debate.

And, we actively promoted Elizabeth May’s “Save Democracy from Politics” tour.

Now, the Liberals have turned their backs on voters who believed the promise to end winner-take-all voting. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians took the time to participate in the consultations in good faith, only to see the evidence and the promise tossed aside by Justin Trudeau and by MPs who put party first.

Fair Vote Canada and our allies will continue to look for opportunities to convince the Liberal Party to reverse its decision and get PR back on the table for 2019. We know there are MPs who support PR within the Liberal Party. But if the Liberals fail to deliver on electoral reform, they will be judged on their actions.

As Justin Trudeau told a young woman passionate about electoral reform from “Daughters of the Vote” on March 8, “I know that there are people who disagree with me, and that’s what elections are for.”

Working together to elect advocates from all parties into positions of power is crucial.

That is why we need to make sure electoral reform remains a key NDP platform. Voting starts in 3.5 months. Let’s make a difference in the leadership race.

This movement urgently needs:

a) An NDP leader committed to making proportional representation a prominent platform commitment and an election issue. We need an NDP leader who will actively raise the profile of this issue across Canada over the next 2.5 years!

b) An NDP leader offering an ironclad promise to deliver a proportional system in time for the next election if elected to government

c) An NDP leader committed to making PR a condition of support in any minority situation.

We all know that PR has been an official policy of the NDP for over a decade. This is not about the policy book – it’s about passion and leadership.

We cannot take this outcome for granted. We have to help make it happen.

Follow this webpage where we will track every public mention by the candidates of proportional representation – including Guy Caron’s inspiring commitment to deliver PR, Jagmeet Singh’s comments stating ‘PR is a priority’ and Niki Ashton’s commitment posted on her website.

Will you help us elect an NDP leader passionate about delivering electoral reform?

Please join the NDP to vote in the leadership race now.

Sincerely,
